Romu Family with Garrett Yount (IL) & Andrew Schugel (CO) 2009

"We have hosted Border Cat players for six years now and have enjoyed the experience greatly. It is a pleasure to help these fine young men in their pursuit of their dream of someday being a big league star. Their continued friendship and the friendships of their families from all over the world is something we will cherish forever.  GO CATS GO!"      John & Donna Romu

Gladun/Cates Family with Curtis Wagner (CA) 2009

"As a first time host family, the experience exceeded our expectations. The Border Cats made us feel welcomed and very appreciated as an integral part of the organization. Getting to know our player was an extremely positive experience. The relationship we developed with our player and his family has led to an ongoing friendship. The whole experience truly required little effort on our part but has led to a lifetime of positive memories."        Dave and Melanie

This year, approximately 25 young men will move to Northwestern Ontario for the summer to play for the locally owned Thunder Bay Border Cats.  From approximately May 25th through August 15th, these young, aspiring ballplayers hone their skills by playing ball at our stadium.  College players arrive from all over the United States and Canada to participate in the Northwoods League and be a part of the Thunder Bay Border Cats baseball team.

Over the history of the Northwoods League, the host family program has been a vital part of every team's success both on and off the field. Having the players become a part of a local family helps these young men have some sense of normalcy in a new city. Many of the players become more than a guest; they actually become part of the family.

Experience memories that last a lifetime!

HERE'S THE PITCH . . . .

  • Provide a home with a positive environment, some meals and a bed for player(s) during the baseball season - 35 home games.
  • Your family receives complimentary season tickets and will be invited to attend host family events.
  • You will have the opportunity to make a positive impact on the future of a young man.
  • You just might be getting to know a future Major League baseball star!
  • Be the recipient of lots of love, smiles, and great memories!

Baseball is again back in Thunder Bay with the arrival of the Thunder Bay Border Cats.  True amateur sportsman, these boys of summer are non-salaried and play for the experience and the love of the game.

The Host Family Program is an integral part of the team's success both on and off the field.  As a participant in the program, you would host a player during his stay in Thunder Bay.  Players will spend approximately 35 days in the city during the season.  As a host you would provide a home, some meals and where possible, transportation when the player is in town.

If you are interested in adopting a Border Cat for the summer or want more information, please contact the Border Cats office at 766-CATS (2287).
